Oxford's population is becoming increasingly diverse over time. At the 2001 Census the black and minority ethnic population constituted 12.9% of the population - which is estimated to have risen to 19.6% by 2009. This is a consequence both of migration and younger age profiles amongst non-white ethnic groups, which means there is a higher birth rate and lower death rate in these populations.
