What are former tenancy arrears?

When a tenant moves out of their Council property, or a tenancy ends but there are still rent arrears outstanding on the rent account, we call these arrears 'former tenancy arrears'.

What can I do if I have arrears when I know I am moving out of my tenancy?

When you know you will be moving you should give four weeks written notice that you intend to end your Oxford City Council tenancy. At this time you should make arrangements to pay off all arrears and rent due up until the date you will be moving out.

If you are unable to pay off all of the rent outstanding, you should contact the Rents Team using the details on the right hand side of the page.

How can I repay my former tenancy arrears?

You can make payments in the following ways:

• At any Post Office using the rent card from your old address;
• By posting a cheque
• By Setting up a Standing Order

What happens if I fail to clear my former tenancy arrears?

Will I be able to apply for another Council tenancy if I have former tenancy arrears?

If you were evicted due to not paying your rent, you may not be eligible to join the Council Housing waiting list. If you are considered eligible, you will be required to pay off any debts before you can accept a property in the future.
